If a wider opening forces the project into smaller or weaker posts because of property-line constraints, the "extra clearance" can create a structural problem. The gate width, frame, post size, hinge system and foundation should be designed together.
This is especially important for solid privacy gates, heavy steel gates and long single-leaf swings.
Trailers Need More Planning Than Passenger Cars
Trailer users should test the gate location with the actual towing geometry in mind.
A trailer’s rear axle does not follow the same path as the tow vehicle. On a tight turn, the trailer tracks inward. That can bring tires or fenders close to the gate post even when the truck clears comfortably.
